When I began marriage, I refused to believe that word, even to the detriment of my own safety. There is a story Dean often tells that I was so stubborn and so unwilling to listen to anything he said that I walked across the street into oncoming traffic just to spite him. Yes, that is true. I wasn’t going to listen to ‘him’ telling me to hurry up. I’d do it at my own pace, thank you very much.
I can confidently say I’ve come a long way from that moment – well, most of the time. I recently ran across the following quote by Richard Foster and loved his explanation of what submission is – makes a little more sense to this prideful, stubborn woman.
“It is the ability to lay down the terrible burden of always needing to get our own way…In the discipline of submission we are released to drop the matter, to forget it. Frankly, most things in life are not nearly so important as we think they are.”
